Taking Advantage of Local Community Centres: The Auburn House

Posted by Rachel R. Vanderveen on Thursday, October 18th, 2012 at 12:18pm.

The absolute worst time to take kids to lessons has got to be between 4:30-5:30, and yet this seems to be when everyone offers extracurricular activities for kids in our children’s age groups. I don’t see how other moms make this fly. How can you get the kids from school, make dinner, and get them to the lessons on time? Not to mention stay at the facility and wait for them to be done? Maybe they make better use of their slow cookers than I do.

Living in Auburn Bay is such a pleasure, and our community centre, the Auburn House, is one of the most beautiful in the SE. We’ve done a few lessons there, but since we’ve started homeschool, I’ve focused more on the South Fish Creek Community Association (SFCA) for classes because they offer homeschool programs which occur during the day. Although I do want to give a major shout out to the SFCA because their programs are competitively priced, and are offered at times that work for our family, I do have one major issue with the SFCA: it’s not in Auburn Bay. Which means I have to drive like a snail down 22x (will the construction ever be done???) all the way to their building (connected to the YMCA near Shawnessy), wait for the program to be done, and then take the long, awful crawl down 22x back home.

So it occurred to me yesterday---and this was a brand new thought---that instead of looking anywhere possible to find classes that don’t start at 4:30, I can actually book at the Auburn House, even if it’s at that 4:30 because rush hour within our community isn’t like rush hour on 22x.

How often are we forgetting that our home community centre is probably the most convenient place for our kids to go to, especially when considering it gives them an opportunity to socialize with other kids right within our neighbourhood? The thing that triggered my thinking towards this vein was seeing the reminder posts on Facebook. I liked the Auburn House on Facebook a while back, and have just now started to pay attention to the posts. So “like” your local community centre on Facebook, and see if something might turn up which your family could enjoy.
