Spotlight on McKenzie Towne Part Deux

Posted by Rachel R. Vanderveen on Friday, April 6th, 2012 at 12:15am.

Back in January I started a series on McKenzie Towne. Then I went and had a baby. Then that baby decided to have a little 2 week stay at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Then I got home, and I was tired. Then once I recovered, I didn’t really feel like blogging about McKenzie Towne; I felt like blogging about other stuff. Then tonight, my darling newborn is refusing to eat and prefers instead to fuss and fitfully sleep. This is not allowing me a lot of sleep so I’ve decided to make use of the quiet in the house and sit here in front of my ancient laptop to finish my series on McKenzie Towne!

So *knuckle crack* let’s talk about one of my fave places to represent people buying and selling Calgary real estate: McKenzie Towne! In the last blog, I talked a lot about M-Towne’s location in Calgary, and tried to sketch a picture with my words of what a person could expect to see in this community. Today, I just want to talk a little bit about how neat the shopping district is in there, and recommend some of my fave places to go.

The shopping district in McKenzie Towne is super-cool. It’s set up with a bunch of old-fashioned store fronts and the feeling of an outdoor mall. I’m not going to lie to you: driving in there is annoying. Also, parking can be frustrating at best, BUT the shops and restaurants are certainly worth it!

Just this weekend Clint and I discovered a little candy shop tucked inside High Street, that made our kids flip a lid! The Jolly Goods Candy Stop is just a little bit of heaven! Serving all kinds of candy and ice cream with just a hint of British Flair!

My kids adored the ability to pick out candy of all sorts, and I adored the Wills and Kate commemorative mug that I found on the shelf. After staring at the thing for the better part of 5 minutes, Clint walked by took it out of my hands and said, “I can make you a mug with their picture for a quarter of that price.” (It was $17). I put the mug down thinking, It’s not the same.  But I digress.

Also on that street is the local favourite pub, The Kilt and Caber. I’ve had some great dishes there, and, for a pub, I have to say the food is very good and the prices are reasonable!

And last, but certainly not least, I am going to tell you my very favourite thing about the McKenzie Towne Shopping Plaza. OK. Ready? IT HAS A DRIVE THRU PHARMACY!!!! No jokes, people! How many times have I driven up to that blessed Rexall with a van full of screaming sick kids. Many times. Many, many times. I even have their fax number now so that I can fax my prescription ahead of me!

Well, that’s a wrap for our spotlight on McKenzie Towne! Stay tuned for more spotlights in the weeks to come!
