Sending Your Child to a Top Calgary School for Free: St. Philip

Posted by Rachel R. Vanderveen on Wednesday, March 27th, 2013 at 1:50pm.

St. Philip School

Calgary Catholic School District

Feeding Communities: Part of Lake Bonavista Estates (Lake Bonaventure, or anything south of Lake Bonavista Drive) Parkland & Diamond Cove

I have had the privilege of meeting a few people lately who send their children here and absolutely love it. I called the front desk and here is what I found out:

Two Programs & Eligibility

Apparently there are two programs: the regular program and the fine arts program. However, even in the regular program students will get a high dose of fine arts. In order to be eligible for the regular program you have to live in one of the feeder communities: Lake Bonaventure, Diamond Cove, or Parkland. To be eligible for the fine arts program, you can live anywhere south of Glenmore Trail. My understanding from the lady at the front desk, is that applicants do not have to be Catholic, however it should be understood that the school will be covering religious topics from a Christian worldview.

School Ranking

St. Philip ranked # 5 in all of Alberta. That’s #5 out of 659 schools across the province. It’s even more exceptional when you consider that the schools that ranked 1-4 were all tied for first place, which means St. Philip is virtually second in Alberta. Also, 2 of the 4 schools ahead of St. Philip were pricey private schools. So you can see that sending your child to this school is excellent value considering that most people who send their kids to a school of this caliber are paying big bucks per child and St. Philip is free to the people who live in the feeding communities.

Calgary Real Estate that Feeds St. Philip

It should be noted that the real estate that feeds this school is excellent. One community, Lake Bonaventure (or by the proper MLS name “Lake Bonavista Estates”) just happens to be my very favourite community in all of Calgary. However Parkland and Diamond Cove are wonderful communities as well. You can expect to find older homes, with unique floorplans in this area. Many homes have had extensive renovations and are in better condition than brand new homes in newer communities. You may even find a home or two that has been completely torn down and built brand new.  Lot sizes are much larger in these areas than in the newer communities on the outskirts, and with the sprawl in Calgary these communities---which 25 years ago were considered to be on the edge of the city---are now considered to be more desirable because of their perfect blend of suburban living and proximity to the core.

You can buy real estate for any budget in these communities with condos in the high 200s to Single family homes in the $400s on the lower end of the spectrum. However luxury real estate is what these communities major in, and the sky is the limit for excellence in Parkland, Diamond Cove, and Lake Bonavista Estates (Lake Bonaventure). These communities showcase excellence of location with a stunning fully private lake (Lake Bonaventure) to views of Fish Creek and the Bow River (Parkland & Diamond Cove.

I see a few types of buyers that would fit well into these communities. There are some homes in there that can be bought for a bargain and slowly fixed up while a family lives there. People looking to add value and equity to their home while they live in it would do well in these communities because they will likely always be in high demand. The next type of shopper I see is the discerning buyer looking for something move-in ready, with a decent proximity to downtown, and a stunning literally unmatchable view. These people want the best and they’re not afraid to pay for it. If either of these is you, Diamond Cove, Lake Bonaventure, and Parkland could work for you and you’ll have the added bonus of educating your children at one of Alberta’s top schools for free.
