Schools in the SE of Calgary

Posted by Rachel Vanderveen LF on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2017 at 8:13pm.

In my experience schools are a hot topic of conversation; not only for people who are looking to relocate to a new community, but also for young families who need to plan for which schools are available to them and where they want to send their children. It’s because of this that I want to take a quick look at the schools available in the communities of ward 12 also known as Calgary’s deep south. These communities include; Auburn Bay, Copperfield, Cranston, Douglasdale Estates, Douglas Glen, Mahogany, McKenzie Lake, McKenzie Towne, New Brighton, Seton, Shepard, and Quarry Park.

Combined the deep south is home to 11 Public schools and 8 Catholic schools, these include a mix of grades K-9. Of these schools only Monsignor J.S. Smith School in Douglasdale and Blessed Cardinal Newman School in McKenzie Lake offer special programming in additional to regular studies. What kind of special programming you ask? Both offer Hockey Canada Skills Academy (Gr.7-9) and Blessed Cardinal Newman also offers a congregated gifted program. One would think that 19 schools for 12 communities should be sufficient, right? Not quite. With the large number of young families in these communities combined with the fact that they continue to grow by leaps and bounds there is an increased need for more. Fortunately, the CCSD has officially announced that there will be a new K-6 school opening in Mahogany fall 2018. There are also indications of a new Catholic elementary school in Auburn Bay; however, no official announcements have been made so for now we can only hope the rumblings come to fruition.

At this point you may have stopped and reread this article making sure you haven’t missed the part where I discuss all the high schools. Your keen observational skills have not led you astray; there are currently no high schools in the deep south of Calgary. As of right now the closest ones are either in Sundance, Acadia, or Canyon Meadows. Thankfully it’s not all doom and gloom, the CBE has announced that there will be a High School built in Seton! We are told it will have a capacity of 1800 and their anticipated opening date will be Fall 2018.

Until next time,
