Clint and I are in the process of finishing our basement. Framing, electrical and plumbing are all done, and presently Clint is downtown getting permits. (I wrote this last week and am just now posting). There is something amazing about having one’s basement finished. We feel like we’ve arrived! Especially because we’re doing it all completely above board and getting permits all the way through!
Finishing our basement will certainly add value to our humble little abode in Auburn Bay, but I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to get those permits in place when you decide to finish your basement or make any permit-requiring changes to your home. I know this, because last year we had one heck of a runaround trying to get permits for the concrete deck that we poured after the fact. Not a fun task. Thank goodness we ended up getting the permits that we needed, but it wasn’t without some sleepless nights!
It’s actually super-simple to get those basement permits in Calgary. You do have to make some drawings, and make a drive downtown, but once the inspections come up you should be cooking with gas! (As long as it’s all done correctly, and really if it’s not done correctly…that’s probably something you want to know about!)
Can you get permits in Calgary if your basement is already finished? The answer is yes and no. (But more yes than no). First of all, you can expect to pay 10 times the cost of getting permits done before you finish, and even then, it may be difficult or impossible to do it without removing some or many of your walls. Clint and I have experience with this issue in Calgary. If you’re one of those people who needs permits after the fact, give us a ring and we’ll explain the best way to do it.
