Offering a Warm Welcome to Discount Brokerages

Posted by Rachel R. Vanderveen on Monday, February 14th, 2011 at 4:12pm.

Somebody asked me yesterday what I thought about a new discount brokerage that came to Calgary. My response was to tell that person that the brokerage in question had my warmest welcome. I believe my answer differs from many agents out there who bluster and blow about discount brokerages. There is room in any market for more competition and if you're reading my blogs, you'll know that I love competition. It's good for the industry and it keeps everyone on their toes, forcing agents to provide better services and to do everything they can to sell your Calgary house or find you that perfect listing on the Calgary MLS.

If there are people out there who want to arrange and run their own showings, do their own advertising, and negotiate their own price, I say, "Why not?" Let them try. I've been in this business long enough to know that it isn't easy to sell a house in Calgary or to find the perfect house on the Calgary MLS. But if people want to take a crack at it, they should be allowed to do so.

You see sometimes, I get too cheap busy to go to my hairstylist, so I take my kitchen shears and just start hacking because the split-ends drive me nuts. The end result is that my hair looks like Bridget Jones' hair post-convertible-ride-with-Hugh Grant. But it's cut, and the split ends are gone, and I guess I got what I wanted. Anyone can pick up a pair of scissors and cut hair, but to create a great product you need Ken Paves to give it a shape that works. Anyone can throw their home on the market, but to get the highest price, well that takes skillz. Yah, you read that right. Skillz with a "z". Skillz (with a "z") are certainly what gets the home sold for the highest price, including marketing, digitizing, internet campaigns and negotiation, but the other huge part of this gig is the money the agent spends on your listing. There is a high cost associated with marketing a property. So if you're thinking of taking out your own pair of Real Estate kitchen shears, I'm here to tell you that you may save some money on hiring an agent, but you'll likely lose on the sale price of your home and the amount of headache and time commitment it takes to do our job without having our training. I'm not saying there aren't any exceptions. Sometimes discount brokerages work out, and people are satisfied, and that's awesome! Competition is good!

All of that aside, I do sincerely welcome all Calgary discount Real Estate brokerages to our marketplace, because when your clients get tired of the minimal showings which produce no offers or low-ball offers, and they just gotta move yesterday, well, by golly, it makes the rest of us agents out there look like superstars with even the slightest effort. So rock on!

Until next time
