Movember in Calgary
It's that time of year once again when men sport moustaches to raise money for a good cause. Good moustaches, bad moustaches, somewhere in between - the point of Movember isn't to make a style statement, it's to increase awareness for prostate cancer. Roughly ten years old, Movember originated in Melbourne, Australia and has become a global phenomenon.
Over the years, Movember has raised over $301 million. The majority of funds raised comes from online donations and pledges. Men sign up on Movember's official webpage individually or in teams and document the growth of their moustaches for the month of November whilst encouraging friends and family for pledges.
So what's kicking around Calgary during Movember 2012? Calgary's Movember committee has created a challenge for staff of the hospitality industry. Teams will square off against one another to see who can gain the most support and raise the most money. There will also be "Mid-Mo" parties on November 17 at Craft Beer Market, followed by celebrations on November 18 at both Ceili's locations and WURST. The wrap party, including judging of best Mo will be on November 30 at Cowboys.
Fans can also download Mogress, an app built by Calgary's own mobile development house Decoder, to track Movember progress. One in seven men will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in their lifetime. Even if you don't want to (or can't!) grow a moustache, you can still support this great initiative by donating, visiting a Movember event, or checking out the Movember website which also has merchandise for sale.
