Fat off the Land: a Blog About Calgary Real Estate, Parenting, and Food

I could talk about lighting forever. Natural light in a home is probably one of the most saleable features you can get. This is why the beginning of this step is making sure that when you build or buy a home, you have an eye for light. You can do this by:

  • Increasing windows as big as the builder will allow
  • Choosing a good exposure for your backyard S, SW, SE, and W, and avoiding N, E, NE, and NW
  • Adding transom windows
  • Choosing a layout that maximizes light
  • When finishing your basement, double the amount of lights that you think is appropriate.

The truth is that we have become more and more indoor creatures and people generally like the feeling of a home soaked in light. So buying or building a home with great structure, helps a lot

Staged home in CalgaryTime to start another one of my series and this one is on showing your house. After so many years of showing homes, you start to see the simple things that make a house stand out and add value. Not showing your home in its best condition, leaves you vulnerable to no offers or low ball offers. When I walk into a ragged home, I think a few things:

  1. This seller is not serious about selling their home.
  2. This seller is burnt out and desperate for a sale.
  3. This home has not been taken care of.
  4. This home needs a low ball offer.
  5. So many other negative thoughts.

Study after study proves that staging your home and showing it for all it’s worth, yields a quicker sale and a higher price. There are so many parts to giving a perfect showing. I’m

The result was the creation of Bacon Wrapped Rotisserie Chicken, but we like to call it "Heaven on a Stick"

No Time to Relax After Selling Your Home

It’s over. It’s all over. No more showings. No more mopping floors. No more dogs in your back seat and no more begging a myriad of friends to host you while buyers walk through your homes and leave ungrateful, muddy footprints on your front tile. You have a firm sale. Some poor shmo bought your tiny closets, and woefully inadequate pantry, and now you’re moving to your palace, where space and storage abounds.

Things You Don't Want to Forget

Now what? Usually there is a gap between selling your house and when you actually move in; and if you’re kind of wondering what you should be doing - well, here it is. These are some of the necessary evils that need to be done when you're moving into a new place, the

I have been asked for tips time and time again for running great projects for the Angels, and instead of typing it each time, I’m posting it here so that whenever I get asked, I can just send a link!

The Angels is a group the harnesses the power of neighbours doing small things to create a big effect for a neighbour in need. We approach each case in our given community on a project-by-project basis. Usually a report of a neighbour in need will come in to the admin of the group, and the admin will assign a project leader or team lead to handle the request.

As team lead, it’s your job to make the project a great one. Here’s some tips to run a great project.

  1. Write a good story. Tell the people why they should support your cause and why your

On Considering a Vasectomy and Other Inappropriate Topics for My Business Blog

You Know It's Time for a Vasectomy When...Well the time has come and after having a small army of children, we are finally starting to throw around the big “V,” word. It’s probably harder for me. I’m the one with the glowing ovaries who smells the scalp of a newborn, and feels an uncontrollable urge to steal it and raise it as my own. However, deep down, I know it’s time…This crazy train has to end. As we’ve been carefully considering this big, huge decision we’ve had a lot of Jeff Foxworthy moments which I would like to now share with you. Feel free to post your own in the comments.

If you have had to implore more than one child at a time to stop licking things on a plane ride more times than you can count on 2

A Look at Real Estate Feedback for Sellers and Realtors

Every agent seems to have a differing opinion on what constitutes real estate feedback , and whether or not it’s useful. In this blog, I’d like to define true and correct feedback, and outline how it is useful to the seller and particularly to the Realtor listing the seller's property.

Feedback, in common terms, is when an agent who shows a listed property reports back to the agent who has listed the property, what they and/or their clients thought of the home.

Feedback is not an agent reporting back on whether or not their client is interested in a property or intends to buy the property. The answer to that question is obvious when the buying agent submits, or does not submit, a written
