The long-awaited hospital has finally begun to open its doors, but it is not yet a fully functioning hospital. Many programs and services including the wellness centre (which includes a YMCA and resource centre), family clinic, Bone and Joint Cast Clinic and many other clinics, are up and running and serving Calgarians!

Today I am writing a special piece for the men out there who want to hit a home run for Valentine's day this year. I have decided to write it from the perspective of Ryan Gosling to help the guys out there truly channel some hot Notebook -style lovin’. Let it be noted that Valentine’s day is in two weeks, and right about now is the appropriate time to be thinking about what you plan to do on that special day.

And now, here's Ryan:

"Hey, Girl. How about you let me take you down to Cattle Baron in Sundance, and I'll regale you with my knowledge of red wine."

"Hey, Girl. How about I find us a sitter and we'll go see Twilight at Chinook Centre?"

"Hey, Girl. How about you let me clean the house to prep for your Norwex party?"

"Hey, Girl. Why

flipthishouse_120When you’re doing a flip where you do not live in the property while you renovate, you’re always working against a clock. Every day that you hold the property costs money and eats into your profits. For that reason, it is of vital importance that you create a schedule and follow it closely. Of course we can all make a schedule based on hopes and dreams. It would be nice to have cabinets all in and installed in one day, but realistically, that is very unlikely to be the case. Check with trades, and professionals along the way before you start your flip to make sure your estimates on time are reasonable. I usually tell people to go ahead and add 5% to their best estimate of how long they think it will take from possession to resale, just to make sure they

budgetingWell, it's a new year and many are tightening their belts as a result of some over-indulgence throughout the holidays. If you're one of many sellers looking to get a head start on sprucing up your house for the spring season (and aren't you smart for getting prepared so early!), there are a few items on which you'll want to splurge, and others wherein you can afford to get creatively thrifty. Read on, dear Calgary home sellers, to get my list of fab, frugal, and functional fixes for getting your house market-ready.

Paint Roller Covers

This item might sound a bit silly, but hear me out. It's almost standard now for sellers to give their interiors a coat of neutral paint when getting ready to list, but if you're thinking of buying the roller

flipthishouse_120Welcome back to our fourth installment of the series I’ve been working on which explores how to do a Calgary real estate flip. As I see it there are three basic kinds of flips which work in this market. Perhaps there are a few different variations of these types, but these are the three main ones. Read through the basic flip stratagies and determine which one works best for your budget, time and availability, and skill set

Buy Low, Gut, Sell High

Often times real estate does not sell because it is out of touch with its competition. For example, you may have a lonely 1200 square foot house in a high-end neighbourhood of 1900 square foot houses, and buyers just aren’t interested in the tiny house. Perhaps you have a two-bedroom house in a

Adding a Secondary Suite!

Adding a Secondary SuiteCalgary's real estate market is continuing to boom but as supply starts to decrease, demand is remaining constant. On average, a house in Calgary is $427,000 which is a 2.9% increase from 2011. This is great news for sellers but what can buyers do to offset the high cost that comes with being a homeowner? Many Calgarians are considering adding a secondary suite. The problem is that the city has very specific requirements for people looking to do this and City Hall's estimates show that there are currently between 50,000 and 80,000 illegal suites in Calgary. It's important to educate yourself before taking the plunge.

  1. Make sure that your home's zoning code allows secondary suites. It must have the R-1s, R-C1s, RC1Ls, R-2,

A brand new year. Am I alone in feeling like New Years is the most underwhelming holiday of the year? Everybody builds it up to be this great big event, but as parents of young kids your typical options are to:

a)      Go to a party where kids are not welcome and pay through the nose for the only sitter who is left on New Years Eve. This sitter is likely to be smoker, who doesn’t speak English, and switches the TV to the Home Shopping Network within minutes of arriving at your home.

b)      Go to a party where kids are welcome. Spend the day fighting them to take a nap which they never actually take, and then bring them to the party, where they will be crabby at the stroke of 7:01. Said crabbiness will lead them to spend the rest of the evening
